abstract | 1. A catalyst comprising: (i) a catalyst support comprising (a) a core that includes particles of alumina and (b) about 1-40% by weight of silica relative to the weight of said catalyst support coated on the surface of said core; the BET surface area of said coated catalyst support is greater than 20 m/g; the porosity is at least about 0.2 cm/g; and the normalized sulfur uptake (NSU) value is up to 25 µg/m; and (II) 0.1-10% by weight, based on the weight of said catalyst, catalytically active elemental transition metal or compound or complex thereof, on the surface of said coated catalyst support. The catalyst according to claim 1, wherein said alumina particles comprise particles with an average particle size of 1-500 µm or agglomerates of particles with an average particle size of 1-10 mm, or mixtures thereof. The catalyst of claim 1, wherein said primary particulate alumina particles are first coated and then formed into agglomerated supports. Catalyst according to claim 3, wherein said agglomerated support is coated a second time after formation of said agglomerated support. 6. The catalyst according to claim 1, wherein said core is doped with metals or metal oxides selected from alkaline earth metal oxides, rare earth oxides, and silica in an amount of 0.1-10% by weight of the coated catalyst support. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein said transition metal is selected from Fe, Cr, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ni, Pd, Mg, or mixtures thereof.
