abstract 1. A catalyst for holding nitric oxide, comprising:! substrate; ! a first porous oxide coating layer on a substrate, wherein said first porous oxide coating layer comprises a nitric oxide retaining material comprising cerium oxide support particles coated with barium carbonate; and! a second porous oxide coating layer above the first porous oxide coating layer containing a single noble metal, wherein the second porous oxide coating layer is substantially free of platinum, cerium and barium, wherein said single noble metal is rhodium and where said rhodium deposited on particles of heat-resistant metal oxide containing alumina doped with zirconium oxide in an amount up to 30%. ! 2. The catalyst for the retention of nitric oxide according to claim 1, in which the heat-resistant metal oxide contains alumina doped with the addition of from 5% to 30% zirconium oxide. ! 3. The catalyst for holding nitric oxide according to claim 1 or 2, in which the first coating layer of porous oxide further comprises at least one member from the group of platinum metals selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, and mixtures thereof deposited on heat resistant oxide particles. ! 4. The catalyst for holding nitric oxide according to claim 1 or 2, in which the substrate is a honeycomb substrate containing a plurality of longitudinally elongated channels formed by longitudinally elongated walls defining and forming said channels, wherein the channels include loading channels, having open loading end and closed unloading
