abstract 1. A method of extending a disease-free life span in a patient with cancer who is being treated with a chemotherapeutic agent, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a hedgehog inhibitor. ! 2. The method according to claim 1, in which the hedgehog inhibitor is administered in parallel with a chemotherapeutic agent. ! 3. The method according to claim 2, in which the introduction of a hedgehog inhibitor is continued after treatment with a chemotherapeutic agent is discontinued. ! 4. The method according to claim 1, in which the hedgehog inhibitor is administered after cessation of treatment with a chemotherapeutic agent. ! 5. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the cancer is selected from lung cancer, bladder cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple myeloma, acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic myelogenous leukemia. ! 6. The method according to claim 5, in which the lung cancer is selected from small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. ! 7. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the cancer is small cell lung cancer, and the chemotherapeutic agent is selected from etoposide, carboplatin, cisplatin, irinotecan, topotecan, gemcitabine, radiation therapy, and combinations thereof. ! 8. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the cancer is non-small cell lung cancer, and the chemotherapeutic agent is selected from vinorelbine, cisplatin, docetaxel, pemetrexed, etoposide, gemcitabine, carboplatin, bevacizumab, gefitinib, erlotinib, cetuximab and their combinations. ! 9.
