abstract 1. A polymer containing a repeating unit selected from the group consisting of formula (I):! ! where PEI is a repeating unit of polyethyleneimine having a molecular weight of less than 600 Da; ! R is selected from the group consisting of a pair of electrons, hydrogen, C2-C10 alkyl, C2-C10 heteroalkyl, C5-C30 aryl and C2-C30 heteroaryl; ! L is selected from the group consisting of C2-C50 alkyl, C2-C50 heteroalkyl, C2-C50 alkenyl, C2-C50 heteroalkenyl, C5-C50 aryl, C2-C50 heteroaryl, C2-C50 alkynyl, C2-C50 heteroalkynyl, C2-C50 carboxyalkenyl, C2-C50 carboxyheteroalkenyl, C12 to C18 fatty acids, cholesterol, C12 to C18 fatty acid derivatives and cholesterol derivatives; ! and m is an integer ranging from about 1 to about 30.! 2. The polymer according to claim 1, where the PEI contains at least one repeating unit selected from the group consisting of formula (IIa) and formula (IIb):! ! ! where x is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 12, y is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 6, and z is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 13.! 3. The polymer according to claim 1, which is biodegradable. ! 4. The polymer according to claim 1, which is destructible by a mechanism selected from the group consisting of hydrolysis, enzymatic digestion, reduction, photodisintegration and destruction by ultrasound. ! 5. The polymer according to claim 1, where L is selected from the group consisting of C2-C50 alkyl, C2-C50 heteroalkyl, C2-C50 alkenyl, C2-C50 heteroalkenyl, C2-C50 alkynyl and C2-C50 heteroalkynyl and C2-C50 carboxyalkenyl . ! 6. The polymer according to claim 1, where L is selected from the group consisting of fatty acids from C12 to C18, cholesterol and their derivatives. ! 7. The polymer according to claim 1, having a weight average molecular weight
