titleOfInvention METHOD FOR ESTIMATING KIDNEY FUNCTION IN CATS BY MEASURING GREELIN HORMONE LEVELS
abstract 1. A method for assessing kidney function in a cat, including determining the level of ghrelin in the tissue or biofluid of the cat and the direct relationship between the level of ghrelin and kidney function. ! 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the cat is a domestic cat. ! 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the tissue or biofluid comprises a biosample taken from a cat. ! 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the biosample comprises whole blood, blood plasma, or blood serum. ! 5. The method of claim 3, wherein the biosample is obtained while the cat is in a fasted state. ! 6. The method of claim 3, wherein the level of ghrelin in the biosample is determined using one or more enzyme immunoassay, enzyme labeled immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence assay, radioimmunoassay, Western blot, biochemical assay, enzymatic assay, or colorimetric assay. ! 7. A method for diagnosing kidney disease in a cat, which includes determining the observed level of ghrelin in the tissue or biofluid of the cat and comparing the observed level of ghrelin with a reference level of ghrelin characterizing normal kidney function, where the observed level is lower than the reference level, is evidence of kidney disease or a predisposition to him. ! 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the ghrelin reference level is a documented norm. ! 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the observed ghrelin level is determined in the first cat and the reference ghrelin level is determined in a second cat having normal renal function. ! 10. The method of claim 7, wherein the observed ghrelin level is at least about 10% lower than the ghrelin reference level is
