1. A compound of formula II where n is 0-10 inclusive; R is hydrogen or alkyl; R is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, alkynyl, aryl or aralkyl; Y is —C (R) -, —C (= O) - or -C (R) C (= O) -; X is -O-, -S-, -N (R) -, -N (R) -N (R) -, -C (= O) -, -C (= NR) -, -C (= NOH) -, -C (= S) -, or -C (R) -; Z is absent or represents hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl , -CN, -OR, - (CHCHO) R, -C (= O) R, -C (= O) CHF, -C (= O) CHF, -C (= O) CF, -C (= O ) CHN, -C (= O) OR, -C (= O) CHOC (= O) R, -C (= O) C (= C (R)) R, or; p is 0-20 inclusive; R represents represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R represents hydrogen, and alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and denotes a single bond, a cis double bond or a trans double bond; provided that the compound is not 13-cis-retinoic acid, all-trans-retinoic acid or N- (4-hydroxyphenyl) retinamide. 2. A compound of formula IId where, independently for each case, n is 0-4 inclusive; R is hydrogen or alkyl; Y is —C (= O) - or —C (R) -; X is hydrogen, —O—, —S—, -N (R) -, -N (R) -N (R) -, -C (= O) -, -C (= NR) -, -C (= NOH) -, C (= S) - or -C (R) -; Z is absent or represents hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, -CN, -OR, -C (= O) R, -C (= O) CHF, -C (= O) CHF, -C (= O) CF, -C (= O) CHN, -C (= O) CHOC (= O) R, -C (= O) OR, -C (= O) C (= C ( R)) R, or; R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R is hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and denotes a single bond, a cis double bond or a trans double bond. 3.
