A process for separating the enantiomers of a compound of formula (III): pharmaceutically acceptable salts and free bases thereof; consisting of the following steps: a) mixing a racemic mixture of enantiomers of a compound of formula III in a solvent together with a separating compound having a defined stereospecificity to form a solution; the degrading agent is capable of binding to at least one, not all enantiomers, resulting in a precipitate containing at least one enantiomerb) leaving the mixture to stand for a time sufficient to precipitate a stereospecific enantiomer of the racemic mixture from solution and wherein the other the enantiomer remains in solution; and c) depending on the stereospecificity of the enantiomer of the desired compound, collection or precipitate and its purification or collection of the solution and recrystallization of the enantiomer from the given solution.
