| abstract | Process for the preparation of racemic citalopram free base or the resulting acid addition salt and / or R 1 of S-citalopram as the free base or the resulting acid addition salt by separating a mixture of R- and S-citalopram / with more than 50% of one of the enantiomers into a fraction comprising racemic citalopram and / or a fraction of S-citalopram or R-citalopram, characterized in that c) the citalopram precipitates from the solvent as a free base or the acid addition salt formed therefrom, ii) the precipitate formed is separated from the mother liquor; the precipitate is crystalline optionally recrystallized one or more times to form racemic citalopram, and then optionally converted to the resulting acid addition salt; the crystalline precipitate and the crystalline precipitate are optionally recrystallized one or more times to form racemic citalopram, and then optionally converted to an acid addition salt thereof, iii) the parent liquid is optionally further subjected to and S-citalopram or R-citalopram are isolated from the mother liquor and optionally converted to the resulting acid addition salt.
