A compound having the formula: wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from the group consisting of: (a) hydrogen, (b) alkyl, alkenyl of not less than 3 carbon atoms, or alkynyl of not less than 3 carbon atoms; wherein alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl or unsubstituted or substituted by one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, heterocyclyl, acylamino, alkylsulfonyl amino and heterocyclylcarbonylamino, and (c) aryl or aryl or aryl or aryl, R3 is selected from the group consisting of: wherein R3 is unsubstituted or substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, -R5, or R5-alkenyl.and where R3 is unsubstituted or substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of are hydroxy, R5-alkyl, -R5, R5-alkenyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl. alkoxycarbonylalkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, aldehyde, alkoxyalkyl, R5-alkoxy, phosphate, R5-alkylcarbamoyl and R5-alkyl (alkyl) carbamoyl. and wherein R 3 is either unsubstituted or substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of R 5 -alkyl, -R 5, R 5 -alkenyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxycarbonylalkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, aldehyde and hydroxy.and where R 3 is unsubstituted or substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of R5-alkyl, -R5, R5-alkenyl, R5-alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxycarbonylalkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, aldehyde and hydroxy. and wherein R3 is either unsubstituted or substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, R5-alkoxy, R5-alkenyl, alkoxycarbonyl, and carbonyl. R 4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkyl-CO2H and phenyl, wherein the C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkyl-CO2H and phenyl groups may be unsubstituted or substituted with one to three substituents selected from halogens, -OH, -OMe, -NH2, -NO2 benzyl, and benzyl substituted with one to three substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, -OH, -OMe, -NH2 and -NO2, R5 may be -CH2COOH. -C (CF3) 2OH, -CONHNHSO2CF3, -CONHOR4 -CONHSO2R4, -CONHSO2NHR4, C (OH) R4PO3H2, -NHCOCF3, -NHCONHSO2R4, -NHPO3H2, -NHSO2R4, -NHSO2OHOR3, R4, -PO3H2, -SO3H, -SO2NHR4, -SO3NHCOR4, -SO3NHCONHCO2R4, and the following: X1 and X2 are independently selected from oxygen (O) and sulfur (S). Z is selected from the group consisting of a single bond, -O-, - (CH2) 1-3-, -O (CH2) 1-2-. CH2OCH2-, - (CH2) 1-2O-, -CH = CHCH2-, -CH = CH-, and -CH2CH = CH-. and R 6 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, acyl, alkylsulfonyl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, substituted alkyl and heterocyclyl.
