abstract | The invention relates to a process for the preparation of (-)-1beta-ethyl-1alpha-(hydroxymethyl)-1,2,3,4,6,7,12,12b alpha-octahydroindole [2,3-a]-quinolizine of formula I <IMAGE> by reacting 1-ethyl-2,3,4,6,7,12-hexahydroindole [2,3-a]- quinolizine of formula II <IMAGE> with an approximately equimolar quantity of formaldehyde or a polymerized form of the latter and, after isolation, if desired, treating the racemic 1-ethyl-(hydroxymethyl)- 1,2,3,4,6,7-hexahydro-12H-indole [2,3-a]-quinolizine compound of formula III <IMAGE> with a resolving agent in a quantity less than an equimolar quantity, and reducing the 1beta-ethyl-1alpha- (hydroxymethyl)-1,2,3,4,6,7-hexahydro-12H-indole-[2,3-a]- quinolizine-5 salt of formula IV <IMAGE> in which X- represents the radical of an optically active acid, and, if desired, releasing the free base of formula I. The intermediate compounds of formulae III, IV and V are also new, so their processes of preparation are also included in this invention. The compound of formula I has peripheral vasodilatory properties. |
