abstract | This invention relates to a selectively permeable membrane 14 which is positioned between the agent reservoir 15 and the electrode 11 of a donor electrode assembly 8 in an iontophoretic release device 10. Optionally an electrolyte reservoir 13 is positioned between the electrode 11 and the agent reservoir 15. In some embodiments the membrane 14 is permeable to substances with a molecular weight less than a predetermined value and substantially less permeable to substances with a molecular weight greater than the predetermined value. The agent is able to dissociate into agent ions and counter-ions. The dimensional selectivity of the membrane 14, the molecular weight of the agent ions, the molecular weight of the counter-ions and alternatively the molecular weight of the ions of the electrolyte are selected so as (A) to prevent the agent ions from interacting with the electrode 11 and crossing to the electrolyte reservoir 13, where they could otherwise be degraded, and (B) to prevent electrolyte ions, having a similar charge to that of the ions .
