abstract This invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-(aminoalkylthio) carbapenems. In particular this invention relates to a process in which bis(substituted phenol) phosphorohalidate is used to form an intermediary enol phosphate which can be converted into 2-(aminoalkylthio) carbapenems by reaction with appropriate thioalkylamines. Some of the 2-(aminoalkylthio) carbapenems prepared in accordance with this invention are useful as antibiotics.
