abstract The invention relates to a process for the treatment of corks which comprises in a first stage or cleaning stage, especially with agitation, treatment of the corks at ambient temperature with an aqueous alkaline solution containing a mixture of sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate and hydrogen peroxide; in a second stage or resting stage, drying the corks at a temperature of the order of 40 to 80 degree C; in a third stage, or disinfection stage, treating the corks with an acid aqueous solution until equilibrium is reached, this containing a mixture of acetic acid with peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide; and a final drying stage.
