The finely divided dispersions can be obtained by emulsion polymerisation from suitable monomers and contain biocidal, cationic- surfactant quaternary organic ammonium compounds, preferably tetrasubstituted ammonium compounds of the formula (I) and/or alkyl- or alkenylpyridinium compounds of the formula (II), in particular in an amount of from 0.1 to 20 % by weight, based on the dispersion polymer. The mean particle size of the polymer particles in the biocidal, cationic polymer dispersions is preferably from 0.02 to 0.5 mu m at a cation activity of from 1.5 to 600 mu mol per g of solid, measured at pH 7, and the solids content of the dispersions is preferably from 3 to 40 % by weight. The dispersions are used as finishing agents for microbe-endangered substrates, preferably for wood protection, for emulsion paints and for plastic or synthetic resin plasters, where the biocidal finishes which can be achieved may exhibit surprising long-term biological actions. |
