abstract The new tert. aromatic alcohols are of formula (I) and their tricarbonyl chromium complexes are of formula (II), in which X is Cl or F and R1, R2 and R3 are H, halogen, opt. substd. alkyl, alkoxy, mono-, di or tri-alkyl silyl, OH, substd. amino or amido, or ester gps. They are made from complexes of formula (III) by alkylation with a benzophenone to produce good yields of complexes (II), which are then de-complexed by action of an oxidising agent to give quantitative yields of alcohols (I). These have applications as pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals and as precursors of triphenyl methane dyes.
