abstract | Process comprises making amt. of O2 available at least equal to the stoichiometric amt. necessary to oxidise the nitric oxide into nitrogen dioxide NO2, and treating the gas with an alkali metal bicarbonate. Pref. the mol. of ratio O2/NO present is greater than 1, esp. greater than 2 and partic. greater than 5. Pref. the amt. of SO2 present in the gas is at least equal to the theoretical amt. necessary to form, by reaction with the alkali metal bicarbonate, an amt. of alkali metal pyrosulphite sufficient to consume all the NO and NO2 in the gas, esp. where the mol. ratio SO2/NO is at least 0.2, pref. at least 0.5 and partic. 1-2. Pref. the gas contains at least 0.06 vol.%, esp. at least 0.25 vol.% O2 and at least 100 ppm, esp. at least 500 ppm SO2. |
