[Also in Divisions C2, C3 and C5] Organic materials may be optically brightened by compounds of the formula where X is a diphenyl residue linked in position 4 and 4' with the =CH- groups, R 1 and R 2 are benzene, diphenyl or naphthalene residues. at least one of R 1 , R 2 and X containing a possibly functionally modified sulphonic acid or carboxylic acid group, or a sulphone, nitrite, hydroxyl, mercapto or methyl group which compounds do not contain chromophoric. The organic material may be a fabric, fibre or paper.
