abstract | The disclosure relates to the use of a synthetic retinal derivative for the preparation of a medicament for the treatment or prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMO) or age-related retinal dysfunction in a subject, wherein said medicament is for administration to said subject intermittently month over a period of at least three months, wherein said synthetic retinal derivative is a 9-cis-retinyl ester of formula selected from formulae (III) to (XVI) as depicted in the specification, wherein A in each formula is CH2OR or CH(OH)OR and R forms said retinyl ester, and the ester substituent of said synthetic retinal derivative comprises a carboxylate radical of a C1-C10 monocarboxylic acid or a C2- C22 polycarboxylic acid, wherein the preferred synthetic retinal derivative is 9-cis-retinyl acetate, 9-cis-retinyl succinate, 9-cis-retinyl citrate, 9-cis-retinyl ketoglutarate, 9-cis-retinyl fumarate, 9-cis-retinyl malate or 9-cis-retinyl oxaloacetate, and wherein the synthetic retinal derivative is converted into a retinal capable of forming a functional opsin/retinal complex. |
