titleOfInvention Cellulosic and lignocellulosic structural materials and methods and systems for manufacturing such materials by irradiation
abstract 602116 Disclosed is a method comprising treating a biomass feedstock comprising a starchy material to change the molecular structure and/or supramolecular structure of the starchy material using an electron beam; and saccharifying the treated feedstock to produce sugars. Preferably the method comprises treating a biomass feedstock, the feedstock comprising a blend of a starchy material with another material selected from the group consisting of sugarcane, sugarcane extract, sugar beets, paper, paper products, paper waste, wood, particle board, sawdust, agricultural waste, sewage, silage, grasses, rice hulls, bagasse, cotton, jute, hemp, flax, bamboo, sisal, abaca, straw, corn cobs, corn stover, switchgrass, alfalfa, hay, coconut hair, cotton, synthetic celluloses, seaweed, algae, and mixtures thereof, to change the molecular structure and/or supramolecular structure of the starchy material and/or the other material using an electron beam; and saccharifying the treated feedstock to produce sugars. The sugars can then be further fermented to produces fuels such as alcohols like ethanol.
