Disclosed is a method of cell culture-based production of isolated, non-bovine and non-porcine GM1 ganglioside comprising the steps of: expanding, in a cell culture, GM1 producer cells derived from tissue that is non-bovine and non-porcine; expressing GM1 ganglioside in the GM1 producer cells of step (a); and isolating GM1 ganglioside expressed in step (b). Also disclosed is a method of preparing a pharmaceutical composition comprising isolated GM1 comprising the steps of: expanding, in a cell culture, GM1 producer cells derived from tissue that is non-bovine and non-porcine; expressing GM1 ganglioside in the GM1 producer cells of step (a); isolating GM1 ganglioside expressed in step (b); and combining the isolated GM1 of step (c) with a pharmaceutical excipient. |
