abstract Disclosed is an in vitro method of diagnosis or prediction of infection of a mammalian wound, said method comprising the step of detecting the presence of a cytokine selected from the group comprising pro calcitonin and amino pro calcitonin (N-ProCT) in a sample of fluid that has been taken from the wound. Further disclosed is the use of a diagnostic device in diagnosis or prediction of infection of a mammalian wound by measuring in vitro the level of a cytokine selected from the group comprising pro calcitonin and amino pro calcitonin (N-ProCT) in a sample of fluid that has been taken from the wound, wherein the device comprises a binding partner for the cytokine.
