abstract Provided is a method of identifying chemicals in the atmosphere or in solution using a biosensor, comprising: a) providing isolated chemosensory proteins, or functional fragments thereof, capable of binding said chemicals of interest, said proteins, or functional fragments being sourced from different insect species; b) incorporating said proteins, or functional fragments into a reporter system; and c) detecting activation of said reporter system, whereby the presence of said chemicals is detected, wherein said proteins, or functional fragments comprise odorant-binding protein, sensory appendage protein, ortholog of Drosophila melanogaster Takeout protein, and odorant degrading enzymes.
