abstract Disclosed is a process for the preparation of a 1-halo-2,7-naphthyridine compound of formula (I): wherein X is Cl or Br; which process comprises the following steps: (i) reaction of a 3-cyano-4-methylpyridine derivative of formula (A) with a compound of formula (II) in the presence of an N,N-dimethylformamide dialkylacetal; to give an enamine derivative of formula (III) wherein R2 and R3 independently represent hydrogen, Cl or Br; and Cy represents a N-linked 4 to 6 membered heterocyclic ring in which m is 1 or 2; n is 1 or 2; Y represents -CHR-, -NR1-, -O- or -S(O)x-; x is zero, 1 or 2; each R independently represents hydrogen or alkyl; and R1 represents hydrogen or alkyl; (ii) cyclisation of the enamine of formula (III), followed, as necessary, by removal of all Cl or Br atoms, to obtain the compound of formula (IV), and (iii) reaction of the compound of formula (IV) with a halogenating agent, to obtain a compound of formula (I).
