abstract Disclosed is the use of 2,5-dihydroxy-3-undecyl-p-benzoquinine or an analog thereof having the formula (I), wherein the substituents are as defined in the specification, optical isomers thereof, polymorphs thereof, and pharmaceutically acceptable esters, ethers, carbamates, oximes of said compounds, said isomers of said polymorphs, salts, solvates and hydrates thereof, in the manufacture of a medicament for use in a method for treatment, amelioration or prevention of a disease or condition mediated by a lipase gene family enzyme, including obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, pancreatitis, diabetes, atherosclerosis, other cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndromes and metabolic disorders. Cosmetic methods for the skin and hair are also provided. Certain novel compounds of formula (I) are also disclosed.
