titleOfInvention | Alloy casting apparatus |
abstract | A casting apparatus 10 that allows the gravity flow and feeding of alloy 15 in a casting operation comprises a vessel 14 for holding alloy 15, a furnace 16 that contains the vessel 14 and which heats the vessel 14 to maintain the alloy 15 at a suitable casting temperature, a die 18 mounted laterally to the vessel 14 and outside the furnace 16, a conduit 20 between the die 18 and the vessel 14, and a tilting mechanism 26. The tilting mechanism 26 can reversibly tilt an assembly comprises the vessel 14, furnace 16, conduit 20 and die 18 about a horizontal axis X. The tilting of the assembly enables or prevents the flow of alloy 15 to a die cavity within the die 18. The die 18 has two parts, a lower part by which it is mounted with respect to the furnace 16, and an upper part 52 that is moveable with respect to the furnace 16 and can be used to open or close the die 18. The die 18 is provided with a supply of protective cover gas when the apparatus 10 is tilted to the casting position, and molten metal is in the die 18. The die 18 is then opened. The gas will protect the surface of the molten metal preventing oxidation. The supply of gas is continued until just before the apparatus 10 is tilted back to the non-casting position. The withdrawal of the molten metal from the die 18 and the conduit 20 will cause a reduction of pressure in the conduit 20. This will cause the gas to flow into the end 36 of the conduit 20 nearer the die 18. The casting apparatus will be more economical, occupy a smaller machine footprint and produce a better quality output. |
