Disclosed is a method for identifying an antagonist of interleukin-5 comprising the steps of: (i) immobilizing IL-5 to a solid support; (ii) (ii) generating a fraction of heparin and identifying the heparin fraction which binds to IL-5 at a location on IL-5 defined by amino acids R32, R67, K70, K76, K77, K83, K84, K85, R90, R91 and R92; (iii) Selecting the identified fraction of non-full length heparin from (ii) and screening for a compound which prevents binding of that fraction to the immobilized IL-5; (iv) Subjecting the compounds identified in (iii) to an assay to determine whether it antagonizes IL-5 activity; (v) Selecting the compound from (iv) which antagonizes IL-5 activity. |
