Disclosed is a method of treating a hydrocarbon containing formation in situ, comprising: Providing heat from at least two heat sources to at least a portion of the formation; Allowing the heat to transfer from the at least two heat sources to a selected section of the formation, wherein the selected section is heated in a reducing environment during at least a portion of the time that the selected section is being heated; and Producing a mixture from the formation; Wherein the formation conditions to produce the mixture are controlled to provide a partial pressure of H2, within the mixture of greater than about 0.5 bar; and Wherein superposition of heat from the at least two heat sources pyrolyzes at least some hydrocarbons within the selected section of the formation.
