abstract Disclosed herein is a method for the production of delta9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which comprises extracting delta9 THC and delta9 THC carboxylic acid from plant material using a first solvent, extracting the acid using a second solvent at a pH of from 12.7 to 13.2, wherein the solvent preferentially dissolves the acid compared to delta9 THC, and optionally converting the delta9 THC acid into a derivative and extracting the derivative into a third solvent. Delta9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) acid is obtained from plant material and extracted into an aqueous solvent under conditions of pH control. the acid is converted to a salt and the salt extracted into a polar solvent, yielding acid of high purity. The delta9 THC acid is then converted to delta9 THC which is further purified and combined with a carrier for pharmaceutical use.
