Disclosed herein is a use of an additive for improving one or more properties of a lubricating oil composition selected from: (a) improving piston cleanliness and ring-sticking properties; (b) improving film-forming tendency; (c) improving frictional properties; wherein the additive comprises at least two salicylate detergent additives selected from: (i) 0.2 to 4 wt % of a first salicylate detergent having a TBN of over 200; (ii) 0.2 to 4 wt % of a second salicylate detergent having a TBN between 100 and 200; (iii) 0.2 to 4 wt % of a third salicylate detergent having a TBN less than 100, said wt % being based on the total weight of the lubricating composition. A detergent additive for lubricating oil compositions comprising at least two of low, medium, and high TBN (total base number) detergents is also described, wherein the detergent additive for use in a lubricating oil composition comprises at least two detergents selected from a group consisting of: (a) a first detergent having a TBN of over about 200, (b) a second detergent having a TBN between about 100 and 200; and (c) a third detergent having a TBN less than about 100. Preferably the detergent is a calcium salicylate. Further described are lubricating oil compositions comprising such detergents, and at least one of Group II base stock, Group III base stock, or wax isomerate base stock. |
