One aspect relates to anti-viral composition containing at least one zinc compound and at least one phenolic antioxidant (and optionally other ingredients such as at least one analgesic, at least one hydrocarbyl containing compound, and water). Another aspect relates to a method of treating lesionous symptoms of a viral infection involving applying an effective amount of the zinc containing anti-viral composition to the lesions. Use of at least one zinc compound, at least one phenolic antioxidant, at least one hydrocarbyl containing compound, and water in the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of lesionous symptoms of a viral infection in a patient in need thereof, wherein the medicament comprises: about 0.005% by weight or more and about 20% by weight or less of the at least one zinc compound; about 0.001% by weight or more and about 20% by weight or less of the at least one phenolic antioxidant; about 5% by weight or more and about 80% by weight or less of the at least one hydrocarbyl containing compound; and about 0.1% by weight or more and about 60% by weight or less of the water. |
