abstract Disclosed is a method for producing cytokinin synthase comprising: culturing or growing a plant or plant cells transformed by a vector comprising a promoter and a cytokinin synthase gene, and harvesting the cytokinin synthase from said host; wherein said cytokinin synthase gene is: (a) a gene which encodes a protein having cytokinin synthesis activity and an amino acid sequence described in SEQ ID NO. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14; or (b) a gene which encodes a protein having cytokinin synthesis activity and which has a modified amino acid sequence resulting from the addition and/or deletion of one or 50 or less amino acids and/or substitution by 100 or less amino acids in SEQ ID NO. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14; or (c) a gene which hybridizes with a nucleic acid having a nucleotide sequence described in SEQ ID NO. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 or 13 under highly stringent conditions, and which encodes a protein having cytokinin synthesis activity. Also disclosed is a method for regulating plant growth using the described cytokinin synthase gene, and methods for searching for a plant gene that encodes an isopentenyl group transferase based on homology with a disclosed amino acid sequence.
