A method of continuous separation of vegetable biomass into a fluid phase and a solids containing phase of pulpy consistence |
abstract |
Moist vegetable biomass is fed to a mixing zone equipped with stirring means of a conditioning vessel. Aqueous juice recycled from a subsequent step is also fed to the mixing zone. The mixture is stirred while any denser material is allowed to sink to a settling zone located below the mixing zone to eventually be disposed of. The mixture is fed to a rotary comminutor whose operation produces a slurry that is fed to a separator for partitioning into aqueous juice and mush. The mush is removed. The aqueous juice is divided into major and minor portions whose ratio provides for balance between water entering and leaving the process, considering that the major portion is recycled to the mixing zone and the minor portion removed. Preferably, the ratio is greater than about 4:1. Preferably, the comminutor has an effective shearing gap whose width is larger than 1 mm. |
