titleOfInvention | Method for manufacturing fatty acid calcium salts from high glyceride content oils and the use of these salts for increasing fertility and for supplying milk production energy in ruminants |
abstract | A method for the preparation of fatty acid calcium salts comprising: i) Providing a fatty acid feedstock having a glyceride content between 30 and 60 % by weight, where the feedstock is optionally heated, if necessary, to form a uniform, liquid admixture. ii) Adding to the feedstock from 2 to 3 molar equivalents of calcium oxide relative to the feedstock, so that a reactive admixture is formed. iii) Adding to the reactive admixture, without heating, from 2 to 5 molar equivalents of water relative to the calcium oxide, so that the calcium oxide hydrates and neutralises the fatty acids to form calcium salts. Also described is a free-flowing fatty acid calcium salt prepared by the above method (where the feedstock used in the above method comprises 15 to 50 % by weight of fish oils). The free-flowing fatty acid calcium salt comprises 50 to 95 % by weight of unsaturated fatty acids, and has a glyceride content of less than 5 weight percent. Also described is a free-flowing fatty acid calcium salt product comprising: from 1 to 10 % by weight of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and from 1 to 10 % by weight of decohexaenoic acid (DHA), and having a residual glyceride content below about 5 weight percent. Also described is a method for increasing fertility in a ruminant, comprising feeding the ruminant an effective amount of the above described product. |
