The invention relates to a method for preserving a packaged deoxygenated haemoglobin blood substitute comprising maintaining the deoxygenated haemoglobin in an oxygen barrier film overwrap package, wherein the package comprises transparent laminate material comprising an oxygen barrier layer and a polyolefin layer, wherein the laminate has a thickness of between about 0.0254 and 0.254 millimetres, and an oxygen permeability of less than about 0.01 cubic centimetres per 645 square centimetres over 24 hours at one atmosphere and at about 23°C, wherein the oxygen barrier layer comprises ethylene vinyl alcohol. |
