abstract Process for preparing L-phenylephrine hydrochloride 3 from prochiral N-benzyl-N-methyl-2-amino-m-hydroxyacetophenone hydrochloride 1, the process comprising: (i) Asymmetrically hydrogenating prochiral N-benzyl-N-methyl-2-amino-m-hydroxyacetophenone hydrochloride with [Rh(COD)Cl]2 and a chiral, bidentate phosphine ligand, in a first reaction step. (ii) In a second reaction step, reductively debenzylating the product from step (i) using palladium and hydrogen, to obtain L-phenylephrine hydrochloride 3. Also described is the product prepared by the above process.
