abstract An isolated nucleic acid molecule that encodes human Akt-3 protein or functional equivalent thereof comprises the amino acid sequence in SEQ ID NO:3, and the functional equivalent is an Akt-3 variant capable of phosphorylating histone H2B such as the allelic variants 47-49(LPY), 118- 122 (NCSPT) and 139-141(HKK) or the mutation variants T305D and S472D.. The Akt-3 protein, antibodies that bind to the protein and vectors and isolated cells comprising the nucleic acid are described. The nucleic acid, protein and antibodies can be used in medicaments for the treatment of cancer. Also described are methods of identifying compounds that inhibit human Akt-3 protein or modulate the activity of a human Akt-3 protein.
