abstract | An oxygen scavenger composition comprising a combination of hydrotalcite-like material and a transition metal compound, uniformly distributed in a carrier such as a thermoplastic resin. The hydrotalcite-like material is represented by Formula I wherein MI represents an alkali metal selected from sodium or potassium; MII represents magnesium, zinc, nickel, copper, cobalt and mixtures thereof; MIII represents aluminium, chromium, iron and mixtures thereof; A represents an anion, at least 60 mole percent of the anion composed of oxygen scavenger anion selected from bisulphate, dithionite, ascorbate, thiolate, phenolate or mixtures thereof; x is a numerical value of from about 0.1 to 0.5; a is an average numerical value of the valence of A; y represents 0 when "a" is less than 2 and a value of from 0 to 0.5 when "a" is at least 2; and n is a numerical value of from 0 to 4. Also described is a container which is suitable to contain an oxygen sensitive material and has at least part of its' internal surface constructed from the composition. |
