abstract |
A method of resolving (S)-3 -(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid from ( )-3-(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid comprises: i) combining ( )-3-(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid with (S)-mandelic acid in water or an alcohol or a mixture thereof forming a precipitate and ii) introducing the precipitate into a polar aprotic solvent or a mixture of polar aprotic solvent and water to form a slurry and collecting the solid from the slurry. The water and alcohol mixture can be water in isopropyl alcohol and the alcohol of step (i) can be methanol and isopropanol. The polar aprotic solvent of step (ii) can be either dimethylsulphoxide or tetrahydrofuran. The mandelic acid salt of 3-(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid is disclosed. The stereoisomeric forms (SS, RR, RS and SR) of the mandelic acid salt of 3-(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid are also disclosed. |
