Piston rings and / or piston in a two-stroke cross-head motor are applied to their radial outer surfaces a run-in layer (32, 37, 40, 42), which has a thickness of at least 0.1 mm in the radial direction and is made from a material containing from 5 to 60% of a solid lubricant, such as graphite, and 40 to 95% of a metallic binder, such as Ni, Al, Si and possibly up to 15% of an organic binder. The macro hardness of the run-in layer is less than 300 HV30. The run-in layer allows the engine to be started up and brought to full load within a total operating period of no more than three hours. |
