abstract Bacteria belonging to a new genus, and methods for producing carotenoid pigment selected from the group consisting of astaxanthin, adonixanthin, 3-carotene, echinenone, cantaxanthin and zeaxanthin, comprising the steps of culturing a bacterium which can form at least one of the carotenoid pigments, and recover an individual carotenoid pigment.The production bacterium belongs to a new genus.According to the present process, various carotenoids can be produced on an industrial scale.Using the present process, (S, S) -astaxanthin can be produced with a purity of almost 10%.
