abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-oxo-4-methylthiobutyric acid (I), its salts and its derivatives, of formula (I): wherein R represents a group selected from COOH, COOR ', NH2, NHR' and NR'R ", wherein R 'and R" are independently selected from the group of straight-chain or branched alkyl radicals of 1-12 carbon atoms, and cycloalkyl radicals of 3-12 carbon atoms. The process consists of catalytic and selective oxidation of but-3-ene-1,2-diol (II) to 2-oxo-but-3-enoic acid (III) and selective condensation of the methyl mercaptan on 2-oxo-butyl. 3-enoic acid (III). The 2-oxo-4-methylthiobutyric acid (I) and its salts and derivatives are used as food supplements, especially in animal feed.
