titleOfInvention | Method for obtaining transgenic plants showing a modified fructan pattern. |
abstract | The invention relates to a method for obtaining transgenic plants which exhibit a modified fructan pattern in comparison with the wild-type plants. By breeding plants with a DNA construct incorporated into their cells, which DNA construct contains one or more fructosyltransferase genes the 5' non-translated region of which is modified in such a way that the expression of the fructosyltransferase is not negatively affected, with the gene being workably linked to a plant-specific promoter region and a plant-specific terminator region. The DNA construct preferably also includes a targeting region upstream of the fructosyltransferase gene for directing the fructosyltransferase gene towards a specific plant tissue or plant cell compartment. The fructosyltransferase which is produced in the transgenic plants changes the fructan pattern of the plants, which leads to differences in plant performance due to varying "sink/source" relationships and yield or increased tolerance to drought, cold or other forms of stress, higher dry matter content, better flavour or shelf life, improved nutritional value. The plants can also be suitably used as raw material for fructan production. |
