titleOfInvention STABLE POLY (METH) ACRYLIC DISPERSION IN AN ORGANIC LIQUID.
abstract Stable dispersions are proposed that are based on an addition polymer, containing mainly (meth)acrylate, in an inert organic liquid, which addition polymer is made up of A) 2-20% by wt (relative to the amount of addition polymer) of a polymeric stabilizer, 95-99.8% by wt of an alkyl(meth)acrylate with 4 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and 0.2-5% by wt of glycidyl(meth)acrylate which has been converted with a compound with a mercapto group and a second functional group which is more reactive in relation to an epoxy group than a mercapto group, and B) a copoly(meth)acrylate made up of I) 2-20% by wt (relative to the amount of addition polymer) of a (co)polymer with at least 5-50% by wt of a hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylate with 2-6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and II) 60-96% by wt (relative to the amount of addition polymer) of a cross-linked (co)polymer, with at least 5- 50% by wt of an hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylate with 2-6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and a monomer which can be polymerized under the influence of free radicals, with at least two ethylenic unsaturated double bonds in a quantity of 0.75 x 10-2 - 1.5 x 10-2 moleq double bonds per 100 g of cross-linked polymer. The dispersions according to the present invention are distinguished by greatly improved stability, in particular in combination with dilution resins such as polyesters, polyacrylates and polyurethanes, and are highly suitable for the application of coating compositions with a high-gloss "metallic" appearance (so- called base-coat/clear-coat system). It is surprising that the orientation of the pigment particles needed for the "metallic" effect is retained or even increases on spraying with the "clear-coat", and that a high solids content of the "base-coat" (<IMAGE>40% by wt) is also achievable with these dispersions.
