abstract Pyrrolidinone derivs. of formula (I): (where Q is O or S. is lower alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, benzyl or chlorobenzyl; X is H or Cl; and Y and Z are Cl or Br; provided that when R is allyl then Y and Z are identical and are Cl or Br and that when R is cycloalkyl then X is other than Cl), e.g. N-allyl-3-chloro-4-chloromethyl-2-pyrrolidinone, and of formula (Ia) (where X is H, Cl or CH3; Y is H, Cl or Br; Z is Cl or Br; R2 is H or alkyl; R2 is H, alkyl, acetyl, Cl, Br, F, I, CF3, NO2 CN, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl, trifluoromethylthio, trifluoromethyl ethylsulphinyl, trifluoromethylsulphonyl, pentafluoropropionamido or 3-methylureido; and R1 is H, alkyl, Cl or (CF), e.g. N-(m-trifluoromethylphenyl)-3-chloro-4-chloromethyl-2-pyrrolidino- ne, are new cpds. (I) and (Ia) are herbicides active pre- and post-emergence.
