Vapour phase oxidation of a hydroxyl compound to the corresponding carbonyl compound. F5-. Comprises using an oxidation catalyst containing one or more metals of Group Ib, e.g. copper, silver or gold, and one or more elements chosen from Group IVb; e.g. germanium tin, or lead, and elements of Group Vb, e.g. nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. The process is useful for preparation of glyoxal from ethyleneglycol. The glyoxal may be reacted with urea to give 4,5-dihydroxy-2-keto-imidazoline, useful for impregnating cellulosic fibres to give crease-resistant finishes. |
