titleOfInvention METHOD FOR PREPARING RUBBER-REINFORCED STYRENIC RESINS
abstract The continuous prepn. of copolymers of a styrene cpd. (I), acrylonitrile and conjugated diolefin is carried out by (a) continuously charging a diolefin and a copolymer matrix of (I) and acrylonitrile in an inert satd. hydrocarbon solvent of b.pt. 120-175 (130-150) deg.C into a polymerisation zone comprising at least a first and second reactor, (b) mass polymerising in the first reactor at below 100 deg.C, (c) mass polymerising the mixt. in the second reactor at 100-140 deg.C in the presence of 0.02-2.5 (0.05-1.5) wt.% of free radical generating catalyst, based on total wt. of copolymer matrix and diolefin to form in situ in the reactors, a rubber dispersed in the matrix and (d) continuously withdrawing the reaction mixt. from the polymerisation zone and heat treating to remove residual diolefin and solvent. Pref. diolefin is butadiene. High degree of homogeneity of the rubber particles is achieved throughout the copolymer matrix and the final resin is gel free.
