abstract | Prodn. of styrene (I) is carried out by (a) oxidising s-butylbenzene (II) with O2 in the presence of one or more metal cpds. as catalyst; (b) hydrogenating the resulting acetophenone (III); and (c) dehydrating the resulting alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol (IV). Step (a) is pref. effected using a catalyst comprising one or more Group Ib, IIb, IIIb, IVb, Vb, VIb, VIIb and/or VIII metal cpds. esp. an acetate, benzoate, naphthenate, stearate or bromide of Co, Mn, Ni or Cr. The catalyst is pref. used in an amt. of 0.001-1.0 wt.% based on (II). The reaction is pref. effected in a 2-5C fatty acid solvent (esp. acetic acid) at 80-150 deg.C and 0.5-50 kg/sq.cm. Step (b) is pref. effected in the liq. phase at 50-200 deg.C and 1-100 kg/sq.cm in the presence of a Pd, Ni or Cu-chromite catalyst. Step (c) is pref. effected at 180-300 deg.C at 900 mm Hg or less in the presence of an Al2O3, TiO2, SiO2-Al2O3, activated carbon, activated clay or organic sulphonic acid catalyst. The process gives high yields of high-purity (I) using (II) as starting material, which is less expensive than ethylbenzene. |
