titleOfInvention METHOD FOR PREPARING AN AMINE OXIDE
abstract Prodn of amine oxide comprises oxidising tert. amine with H2O2 in the presence of >=1 carbonic acid cpd. selected from carbonate, acid carbonate and carbon dioxide in the presence or absence of chelate agent selected from EDTA and stannate, the carbonate, bicarbonate, EDTA or stannate being the alkali metal or ammonium salt. H2O2 is used as 5-70 wt % aq. soln. The wt. ratio of chelate agent to amine is 0.02-2 (0.05-1.0)% and the wt. ratio of carbon dioxide or carbonate to amine is 0.01-2 (0.03-1)%. The reaction temp is 40-80 degrees C. Tert. amine oxide is produced stably in high yield in a short time without using expensive catalyst and organic solvent and the quantity of unreacted tert. amine is 0.5%.
