titleOfInvention | PROCESS FOR PREPARING COPOLYMERS OF VINYL ACETATE, ETHENE AND PEROXYALKYL ACRYLATE. |
abstract | Copolymer of formula (I) where R' is an n-alkyl gp., e.g. CH3, C2H5, C3H7, C4H9 or C5H11; R" has formula (II) or -O-C(CH3)3; x is 24.0-89.9 mols.%; y is 10.0-75.0 mols.%; and z is 0.1-1.0 mols.%, is prepd. by reacting vinyl acetate, ethylene and a peroxy-alkyl acrylate, using a radical initiator, in an organic solvent or an aq. soln. of surfactants and/or polymeric protective colloids, at 20-70 deg.C and 15-100 kgf/square cm. Copolymers are binders for water-resistant emulsion paints, and water- and weather-resistant coatings. They can also be used for prodn. of low-shrink articles, and as plasticisers for, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate and PVC. Vinyl monomers can be grafted onto the copolymers. The copolymers have good mechanical strength. The degree of swelling in an atmos. satd. with water vapour depends on the content of peroxy monomer, and is 0.9-8.6%. The tensile strength is 35-194 kgf/square cm, and 51-245 kgf/square cm after heat-treatment at 110 deg.C. The elongation is 660-1050%, and 540-810% after heat-treatment at 110 deg.C. |
