abstract | Phosphonium cpd. of formula (I): (where R1, R2 and R3 are 1-20C hydrocarbon gps., opt. carrying inert substits., and A- is an inert anion) is prepd. by reacting stoichiometric amts. of (a) R1R2R3P, (b) p-benzoquinone, and (c) aprotic acid of formula H+A-. Reaction is in a liq. medium consisting of a 1-4C alkanol, 1,2-ethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, and/or a 1-4C alkyl ether of these glycols. (I) is a latent catalyst for pre-catalysed epoxy resins. (I) is obtd. as a soln. in the reaction medium and can be used, without isolation and purificn. to catalyse the reaction of epoxides with phenols and/or carboxylic acids or anhydrides. |
